Guided Walk - Londubh

Stories of the Stones - from the people of the past to the plantlife of the present - an exploration of the Londubh Burial Ground, Poolewe.

Monday 28th July 3.30pm – 5pm

Join local guide and historian, Pauline Butler and Highland Council Ranger, Katie Grant for a combined social heritage and nature walk through Londubh Burial Ground.

Local historian Pauline Butler will share details of the lives and legacies of the people who helped shape the Poolewe community. From crofters and sailors to ministers and families, learn how their lives, work, and connections to the land are remembered through headstone inscriptions, local knowledge, and community memory.

Katie Grant, Highland Council Ranger will introduce you to the diverse plant life, lichens, and habitats flourishing among the headstones, a reminder of the deep connections between people and the land they inhabit. You will discover how the burial ground is also a ‘living’ place, where nature is reclaiming and renewing the burial ground.

The walk will start and end at Londubh Burial Ground Carpark, Poolewe. Please arrive 10 minutes before the walk is due to start.

There is no need to book for this walk, please just turn up. The walk is free, but donations are greatly appreciated.

You walk at your own risk and we encourage you to:

  • Wear comfortable footwear

  • Be aware that the burial ground is a grass underfoot, so may be slidy depending on weather conditions. Some headstones have fallen down on the ground and there are also ruins of a small chapel located within the burial ground.

  • Tuck your trousers into your socks and/or check for ticks after the walk.

  • Dress for the weather – bring layers and waterproofs.

  • Prepare for the weather – bring a sun hat and lotion (you never know!).

  • Keep hydrated – bring a drink and maybe even a snack.

  • Only come if you feel well and have a good, general level of fitness.
