Five Years in Wester Ross

Mark Littlejohn

Mark Littlejohn is an Edinburgh born Scot who lives with his lovely wife, Rachel, and their dog, Red, a short distance from Gairloch. Their house is 150 yards from the edge of a beach with views to Skye and Harris.

Mark took up photography late in life after a career in the Police in the North of England. He spent 25 years as a detective, finishing his career as a Computer Forensic analyst in a serious crime unit targetting paedophiles. It was a stressful environment and towards the end of his service he started doing more walking to counter this stress.

Living on the edge of the Lake District it wasn’t hard to find places to walk. Mark was entranced by the beauty of the countryside in which he was walking and in 2010 he bought a camera to record his walks and the views that he’d fallen in love with. Photography quickly became a passion, so much so that just four years later he won the UK Landscape Photographer of the Year competition. He no longer enters competitions and is happiest just wandering the Wester Ross countryside with Rachel and Red, taking snapshots of whatever it is that’s been unlucky enough to pass in front of his camera.

This exhibition shows how Mark’s attention has gradually been diverted away from the bigger views and more towards small scenes such as reeds and kelp.
