Philip Braham RSA is an artist whose interest in continental aesthetics informed his pedagogical role as Programme Director for Art and Philosophy at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 2021.
Philip Braham’s paintings recall the Northern Romantic tradition in which the landscape reflects aspects of the human condition.

Philip Braham
Fidelity to experience is fundamental to his practice, developing from a phenomenological immersion in the landscape that discloses nature as timeless and ever changing, and our mortal being as preciously short. Through rigorous observation and attention to the play of light on land, he senses a connection with nature such that it reflects thoughts, emotions, and memories, thereby establishing a relationship that bears a witness to Being in our turbulent times: an unfolding lived history in painting.
His career includes 26 solo exhibitions and numerous curated group exhibitions, and his artworks are held in public, corporate and private collections worldwide. Among the awards received are the RSA Guthrie Award for Painting, and RSA Morton Award for Lens-based Media.
