Creative Writing Group

Our Creative Writing Group is a friendly, relaxed session to help you get writing. We will maybe do some writing exercises and share our endeavours. The sharing of writing can be either what we have produced during the writing exercise or could be something that we have worked on at home.

Our Ceilidh House gatherings meet once a fortnight and are a welcoming group who enjoy making music, singing or the spoken word.
Come and sit in front of the virtual fireside, sing a song, tell a tale, read a poem, play a tune, bring your knitting or just sit back and enjoy the atmosphere. We look forward to welcoming you!
Doors open at 6.30pm. £2 donation per person appreciated.

Make Do & Mend at Old Schoolhouse, Inverasdale

Delivered in partnership with Inverasdale Old Schoolhouse, our Make Do and Mend sessions are a relaxed drop-in space where people of all skill levels come together to repair, refresh, or recreate with textiles. The sessions are supported by experienced volunteer sewers and anyone can take part whether you are a complete beginner, have some sewing experience, or are confident with your skills.
Participants bring items they want to mend or projects they want to work on and use our supply of donated materials and tools, alongside the shared knowledge and ideas from everyone in the room, to help make things last longer or create something new.
Seisean Cafaidh ~ Gaelic Cafe

Our cafe sessions (held in the Museum Activity Room) are a chance for Gaelic speakers of all levels (including learners and beginners) to come together, share tea, coffee and cake while looking at and discussing material from the Museum Collection.
Nature CSI: Owl pellet dissection workshop
Saturday 17th October

Join the North West Scotland Mammal Network for a hands-on guided dissection of barn owl pellets. Learn how owls hunt and eat small mammals, and why analysis of their pellets can reveal important details about the ecosystem, helping scientists monitor small mammal populations and the spread of non-native species.
All ages welcome, but please note under 8s must be supervised for this activity. This event is free to attend, donation to the Museum's Education Fund would be appreciated. For more details and to book please either visit TicketSource or contact the Museum.
Destitution Road:
Drama Workshop
Saturday 17th October

Inspired by the "destitution roads" built during the Highland potato famine, this workshop explores how history resonates in modern rural Highlands.
Working with improvisation exercises and brand new text, participants will have the opportunity to stretch their creative muscles, delve into local history and experiment with excerpts from a new play.
The session will be lead by
Belle Jones, a theatre-maker and actor who grew up in the Highlands. Her most recent work "Flora", a musical about the life of Flora MacDonald, premiered at Eden Court Theatre, Inverness in March 2026 before transferring to the Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow.For more details and to book, please visit TicketSource or contact the Museum.
Destitution Road:
Open Discussion

Theatre-maker Belle Jones is working on a new play inspired by the "destitution roads" built during the Highland potato famine. The play is set in Wester Ross over two timelines - during the building of the roads and in the present day. The contemporary protagonist is trying to get from Braemore Junction to Gairloch but doesn't have access to a car...
Belle is keen to connect with local people of all ages to learn from their experiences and opinions of local transport links.
This open discussion will cover the background to the play and is an opportunity for members of the community to share their views on the themes raised by the story.

Drawing from the Collections
Thursday 22nd October
3pm - 5pm
These sessions are informal, self led and drop in with no set activity or facilitator. You can spend time looking closely at Museum objects, exploring the galleries and drawing whatever catches your eye.
Tea, coffee and cake are provided part way through proceedings with the chance to chat to your fellow sketchers.
You're welcome to bring your own sketchbook and dry drawing materials, such as pencils, pens, coloured pencils or charcoal (no paints, inks or other wet materials allowed!). Frozen Fun: Ice, Glaciers & Climate Science for Little Explorers

Get ready to splash, touch, and explore the frozen world! Join glaciologist Siobhan Killingbeck for an interactive, sensory-filled workshop all about ice, glaciers, and climate change.
Designed for curious young minds aged 3 and up, mess-friendly clothing recommended!
ll children must be accompanied by an adult. Parents and carers are welcome to bring younger siblings, including babies and toddlers under 3, along with them. Teas & coffees will be available. This drop-in session is free to attend, donations are welcomed.
AGM & Winter Talk: The Crannog Centre, After the Ashes

Following Gairloch Museum's Annual General Meeting, 7pm - 7.30pm, we will hear from Katie Morrison and Laura Taylor. They will share the story of the team effort and skilled traditional workers who came together to build the Iron Age Village and the Crannog following the fire that destroyed the Crannog on 11th June 2021. They will highlight traditional crafts that were needed and the individuals who brought their skills and practise to bear. As well as talking a little about the excavation and Archaeology that informed the project, they’ll also speak about their community engagement activities and the work that reaches beyond the visitor experience.
There will then be teas, coffees and homemaking from the Am Bàrd Cafe team. All our welcome to join us.

Talk: The Gut Brain Axis with Hannah Taylor

Hannah Taylor from Gut Feelings will deliver a lecture that aims to provide you with the how and why behind the common recommendations for gut health in the hope of encouraging long lasting healthy habits that support your physical and mental well being.
Gut Feelings is a Kombucha Brewery based in the North of Scotland. Alongside producing raw and naturally fermented Kombucha Gut Feelings strives to be a centre for education around all things gut health. Hannah Taylor, owner of Gut Feelings, is a Nutritional Therapist and travels to different locations around the UK offering workshops in vegetable fermentation and kombucha brewing as well as courses on how to improve your digestive function, microbiome health and liver functionality.

Guided Walk - Achtercairn

Join volunteer Jeremy Fenton as he leads you round the Achtercairn Archaeology Trail. A good level of fitness is needed for the two-hour exploration of the fascinating early structures and settlements behind the Museum.This walk is free to attend, but donations are welcome.
